Bernadette’s Palette
An Artist’s Journey to her Roots.
My Statement as an Artist
Being a Filipina
My works are a body of illustrations for children’s storybooks, stand-alone watercolors and acrylics mostly depicting Philippine peoples’ attires and their lifestyles.
My country (the Philippines) has 7,107 islands and 134 ethnic tribes. My fascination for these cultural diversity started in my college years. I became involved in my university’s puppet theater which focused on Asian traditional puppetry so I was tasked as its assistant art director to come up with puppet shows with that singular Filipino look and flair which can also stand as representing the country in international puppet festivals. This made me do my research on the different tribal patterns and attires from the uppermost north to the farthest reaching south. And I was both overwhelmed and hooked.
I can also then observe that most Filipinos are not aware of how rich and diverse our native cultures are and so when I am given a book project to illustrate, I always use a fusion of Filipino indigenous patterns and colors. My other acrylic works usually using the coconut shell as my canvas gives me reason to fully concentrate on Philippine culture.
NUTART
My Art using the Ubiquitous Coconut Shell
We live near copra farmers (where coconuts are de-husked and coconut meat is sold as base-line source for a lot of products). Michael, my husband, thought of why not use the coconut shell as a canvas as an alternative medium. He usually thinks out-of-the-box and yes, developed this idea...and it has been 10 years since.
